Entry qualifications for the forklift instructor training requires the lift truck operator to have extensive knowledge about lift truck machinery and skills driving forklifts. Instructor training usually is held at an equipment sales facility or at the campus of a community college, junior college, or vocational or technical school. Forklift manufacturing businesses occasionally offer practical, hands-on, train-the-trainer courses.

Whether provided in a classroom setting or at a manufacturing business facility, registering for the course would involve paying a tuition fee, and buying books, manuals or other materials. Course length varies depending on the course. Individuals participating usually must have satisfactory participation, demonstration, and test scores during the course to qualify for trainer certification.

Instructor programs usually assume that participants have past experience as forklift operators. The focus of the instructor training is on topics including teaching techniques, ethics, curriculum design and safety issues. Participants will know how to demonstrate to their students various aspects of lift truck utilization, such as moving and stacking materials or navigating the lift truck in narrow aisles. Some self-study of the machines and handbooks is required. Trainers would be expected to create their own curriculum, which meets regulation guidelines in terms of subjects presented, such as Safety and Operation. Like for instance, the subject of Safety should comprise an understanding of how to identify possible hazards. The subject of Operation comprises instruction about connecting and using, controls and instruments and steering and maneuvering the fork.
